How to set up the auto counter

Three settings decide everything: how often it steps, which direction, and where it stops.

  1. Set your step size

    The amount added on each tick. Leave it at 1 to count one at a time, or raise it to accumulate faster without a faster interval.

  2. Open the Auto count panel and choose a speed

    Anything from every 0.1 seconds to once an hour. Fast intervals suit demos and stress tests; slow ones suit accumulating over a shift.

  3. Pick a direction

    Tick “Count down instead of up” to run a countdown. Combined with a start value and a minimum, that gives a countdown that halts exactly where you want.

  4. Set a limit so it stops itself

    Open Min / max limits and set a ceiling or a floor. The counter stops on its own when it arrives, which is what makes it safe to leave running.

  5. Press Start auto

    The count runs until it hits the limit or you stop it. Press Undo once afterwards to reverse the entire run.

What an automatic counter is actually used for

Auto counting fits anything that happens on a rhythm rather than on your input, and anything you should not have to sit and watch.

  • Interval training and pacing

    Set a tick per work interval and let it call the rounds, rather than watching a clock while you train.

  • Countdowns to a number

    Start high, count down, and stop at zero. Useful for stock depletion, remaining places, or a countdown on a display.

  • Driving a display or demo

Auto counter, timer and stopwatch are three different tools

These get used interchangeably and they are not the same thing. Picking the wrong one is the usual reason a setup does not do what somebody expected.

The practical difference is the step size. A timer counts seconds because seconds are what it measures. An auto counter can add 1, 10 or 250 per tick, so the number on screen is whatever you are actually counting — units produced, places remaining, metres covered — rather than elapsed time you then have to convert.

If you want elapsed time, use a clock. If you want a number that climbs or falls on a schedule and stops somewhere meaningful, that is an auto counter.

Can I set the counter to stop at a number?

Yes, and this is what makes it safe to leave running. Open Min / max limits, tick Enable limits, and set a ceiling, a floor or both. Auto counting halts on its own the moment it reaches the limit.

Is an auto counter the same as a timer?
