This is a count sheet, not an inventory system. It records what you counted and how far that is from the figure you typed in. It posts nothing to any ledger, adjusts no stock anywhere, values nothing in money, and has no connection to your ERP, POS or warehouse system. Approving and posting a variance is a separate, deliberate act in whatever system holds your stock.
Every free counter in this space gives you a running total, which answers the wrong question. A stock take is not asking how many there are; it is asking where the shelf and the system disagree. That needs two numbers on every line, and this keeps both.

How to run a stock count with a variance
The counting is the easy half. The value is in what you do with the lines that disagree.
Add a line for each item
Give it the name or SKU you will recognise on the shelf, and the book quantity from your system if you have it. A line with no book quantity still counts; it simply is not scored.
Set the case size where it helps
If the item is stacked in cases, put the units per case on the line. You then count cases and loose units separately and the total is worked out for you.
Count what is actually there
Use the keys, not your memory. Count the shelf as you find it rather than counting toward the number you expect, which is the single most common way a stock take goes wrong.
Read the line-match rate, not the net
The big figure is how many lines match exactly. A net variance of zero can hide two offsetting errors, and the page will warn you when it does.
Recount everything that disagrees
Press Recount on a flagged line and count it again from zero. A variance confirmed twice is real; one that vanishes was a miscount.
Copy the sheet and post it deliberately
Paste the figures into your stock system and make the adjustment there, with a reason. Nothing here touches your ledger.

Annual stock take
A line per SKU, counted in one pass, with the variances read off at the end instead of reconstructed from a paper sheet the next morning.
Cycle counting
A short sheet of ten or twenty lines counted regularly, which is how accuracy is actually maintained; the line-match rate is the number you are trying to move.
Goods in
Count a delivery against the quantity on the packing note. The variance is your short-shipment claim, and it is worth raising the same day.
Bar and restaurant stock
Bottles, kegs and cases counted against what the till says was sold. Offsetting errors between similar lines are common here, which is exactly the case a net total hides.
Retail back room
Counting a single category against the system before deciding whether a line is genuinely out of stock or merely lost in the stock room.
Workshop and parts bins
Small parts counted in handfuls rather than scanned, where no barcode exists and a spreadsheet on a phone is worse than useless.
Why a net variance of zero is not a clean count
A stock take does not produce a count. It produces a variance — the gap between what the shelf holds and what the system says it holds — and every decision that follows is made on that gap rather than on the count itself. This is the reason a general tally counter, however good, is the wrong instrument: it gives you one number, and one number cannot express a difference.
But there is a subtler trap waiting for anyone who fixes that by tracking a single total against a single expected figure, and it is worth spelling out because it produces the most convincing wrong answer in the whole discipline: a net variance of zero is not a clean count.

Read the bottom row from the left and the count is perfect. Read it from the right and two of your three records are wrong, which in a real warehouse usually means the blue and red widgets have been picked from the wrong bin for weeks. The aggregate hid it, because the errors were equal and opposite. This is not a contrived example: offsetting errors are what you should expect when similar items sit next to each other.
Why the headline figure here is a line-match rate
The measure the discipline actually uses is inventory record accuracy, and it is judged record by record. A record counts as correct only when the physical quantity equals the system quantity exactly; the rate is then the number of matching lines divided by the number of lines counted. There is no partial credit and no netting off, which is precisely what makes it resistant to the table above. Disciplined operations generally hold themselves to 95–99% or better on that measure.
So the big number on this page is the line-match rate, and net variance is shown underneath it in smaller type. That ordering is deliberate. When the net lands on zero while lines are still wrong, the page says so in as many words rather than letting the zero speak for itself.
Counting in cases without doing the arithmetic
Stock is rarely stacked in the unit the system counts in. Give a line a units per case figure and it gains a second pair of keys: one counts full cases, the other counts loose units, and the counted quantity is the two combined. Six cases of twenty-four plus three loose is 147, and nobody has to multiply anything on a ladder.
The ratio is set per line rather than once for the whole sheet, because a real count sheet crosses several pack sizes and a single global ratio quietly corrupts every line it does not fit. Leave it at 1 and the line behaves as plain units, which is the right default for anything counted loose.
Recount before you adjust
A variance is a claim about reality, and the cheapest way to be wrong about it is to trust a first count. Lines that do not match are flagged for exactly that reason. Recount zeroes that line’s counted quantity and leaves its book figure alone, so a second pass starts honestly instead of being nudged toward the number you now expect to find. If the second count agrees with the first, the variance is real and belongs in your system. If it does not, you have learned something cheaply.
What this does not do
It does not post adjustments, because posting is the part that must be deliberate and attributable, and it happens in the system that owns the stock. It does not price a variance, because valuation depends on a costing method this page knows nothing about. It does not scan barcodes, hold a product catalogue, track bin locations or reconcile against an ERP — if you need those, you need inventory software, and the honest answer is to use some. What it does is the part those systems are worst at when you are standing in an aisle with no signal: hold two numbers per line, keep the arithmetic straight, and tell you plainly where they disagree. Everything stays in this browser, so clearing site data clears the sheet. Copy count sheet exists because moving the figures into your system is, and should be, a manual step.

What is an inventory counter?
A count sheet for recording how much stock is physically present, item by item. This one also holds the quantity your system expects and shows the difference, so the output is a variance per line rather than a bare total. It runs in the browser with no account and no download.
What is stock take variance?
The difference between the quantity your records show and the quantity you physically count. If the system says 15 and you count 13, the variance is minus 2. The variance is the actual product of a stock take: it is what gets investigated, approved and posted as an adjustment.
Why does my count show zero variance when items are missing?
Because a net total lets errors cancel. One line five over and another five short nets to zero while both records are wrong. That is why this page leads with how many lines match exactly, and warns you explicitly when the net is zero but lines still disagree.
What is inventory record accuracy?
A per-line measure of how many counted records match the system exactly, divided by the number of records counted. There is no partial credit, so a line that is out by one scores the same as one out by fifty. Disciplined operations typically target 95 to 99 per cent or better.
How do I count stock in cases and units?
Put the units per case on the line, and you get separate keys for full cases and loose units. Six cases of twenty-four plus three loose comes to 147 without you multiplying anything. The ratio is set per line, because one sheet usually crosses several pack sizes.
Does the inventory counter work offline?
Yes. After the first visit the page is cached, so it opens and counts with no signal, which is the normal condition in a cold store or the back of a warehouse. Counts are saved as you tap and are still there when you come back.
Can I count more than one item at once?
Yes, up to 200 lines on a sheet, each with its own book quantity and case size. Click a line to select it and the keyboard drives that one, so a long count does not need the mouse.
Does my count save if I close the tab?
Yes. Every change is written to this browser's local storage immediately, so closing the tab, locking the phone or losing power does not lose the sheet. It is tied to this browser on this device and clearing site data will clear it.
How is this different from a barcode scanner app?
A scanner identifies the item for you and usually syncs to a stock system. This does neither: you name the lines and you move the figures across yourself. In exchange it needs no account, no catalogue, no signal and no setup, which is why it suits a count you need to start in the next thirty seconds.
Can I export the count sheet?
Copy count sheet puts the whole sheet on the clipboard as tab-separated text, with counted, book and variance columns plus the line-match summary. It pastes straight into a spreadsheet, and from there into whatever your stock system imports.
